A timely tale for our fractured times. Lloyd skilfully creates the kind of frightening world where the only sources of information are the powers controlling the state, in this case a split England, Anglia in the east and Wessex in the west. Petrichor's concern for what her sister's silence may mean drives her to take risks to find her. We are carried along by a sequence of scary, dangerous events where an error of judgement could spell disaster or death. A great read.
A great read! Think of the Berlin Wall, but dystopian, dividing Britain with promises of a better life. Petrichor Jones’s sister was tempted to the other side but when the postcards that describe the wonder of her new life stop, Petrichor suspects that all is not as it seems and embarks on a dangerous journey to find Jasmine and bring her home. Loyalties are tested and trusting anyone carries with it a huge risk. The pace was slow at times, but overall I really enjoyed the book and it gave me lots to think about.

The story follows Petrichor and her family in a divided Britain, trying to navigate impossible choices and every day complications of a world falling apart part. It’s emotional, clever and some moments were heartbreaking. The characters felt so real to me and I could really feel the choices they were making. A little slow at times but that didn’t stop me enjoying it. Thank you NetGalley and The Book Guild for the ARC.
