My love of history was kindled at an early age by a passionate teacher who fired my imagination with epic tales of the adventures of Peter the Great and Napoleon. As an academic historian, I wrote articles for obscure journals read only by my fellow academics. After a career spent in various branches of education, I have returned to writing about my first love – history – but this time in the form of fiction.
The historical period I have become slightly obsessed with are the interwar years that tipped us into the horrors of the second world war. This is the period that I have set my trilogy, The Dark Years, in, starting with The Hooded Man. I have set the action in France, mainly because I am a huge Francophile. Researching the books in the series gives me a reason to travel to France, not that I need much excuse!
