Born and raised in Bolton, and educated at the universities of Oxford, Lancaster and Manchester, Gareth was previously a Professor of International Relations teaching at two universities in Istanbul, Turkey. Since returning to the UK, Gareth has 'reinvented' himself and has concentrated his writings on local, social and family history. His previous book published by The Book Guild - 'The Butcher, The Tailor, The Picture-Frame Maker...Stories of Middle Way' - is a land and house history of the property where he lives in north Oxford. In his latest book - 'Past Lives, Forgotten Stories: Cobbled Patchworks of History' (to be published in 2026)- Gareth explores his own family and looks into the lives of a number of fascinating characters who made their mark in a changing Lancashire in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.
