Howard has spent his working life as an engineer, building oil refineries in the Kazakh steppe, highways on the Canadian coast, and eventually heading back to the lab in London to get his PhD.
Howard describes himself as an 'amateur historian' obsessed with the East Midlands where he grew up. He now lives on the outskirts of London with his wife and young son.
