In July 1977, Harry Chatham is on the brink of becoming the first British winner of the Tour de France when a crash on a twisting mountain descent ends his life and consigns him to a footnote in sporting history.
Decades later, Harry’s son, Jim – unaware of his true parentage until after his mother’s death – sets out to uncover who his father really was. As he digs into Harry’s past, long-hidden family secrets surface, fierce loyalties are revealed, and he is drawn into the darker side of 1970s professional cycling, where he uncovers a shocking truth that has been concealed for nearly forty years. The evidence points to a revelation that could restore Harry’s reputation, but at what cost?
Here's what readers have to say about this book....
Well this is twisty-turny in more ways than one! The plot twists match the twisting roads of the Tour de France and the other rides that are described in the book. Author Rob is a keen cyclist and that really comes through in the descriptions of cycle races which feature throughout. He brings them to life in a way that enables you to picture the circuit and feel like you are part of the action. Cycling not your thing? Don't worry! It isn't really mine either but this is about a lot more than cycling. Its about secrets, cheating, the risks of speaking out and parenthood. The story shifts back and forth through time so you need to keep your wits about you. But it is an approach that keeps the storytelling pacey. I like the way the character of Harry developed through the book; wondering what type of man he really was kept me hooked almost as much as wanting to find out how/why he met his end. Quick note for transparency, I have known Rob for many years but I would have written the same review even if I didnt!
