It is 1922 and the aftermath of a horrific war hangs over a talented group of artists as they begin their freshman year at the Slade School of Fine Art. Artistic ambitions burn bright for Paul Crowley and Jack Trevelyan. The desire to be the greatest artists of their generation is urging them on, but not – they hope – at the cost of their friendship.
For the group of talented artists around them, the struggle to establish themselves brings new challenges amid the din of the Roaring Twenties. Conscious of having been spared the horror of the trenches, they strive to make their mark and become the celebrated clique of their generation.
Here's what readers have to say about this book....
24 Nov 2024 By Guest Truly Absorbing!! This is a truly absorbing read. A well written novel, from an author who clearly enjoys the historical period!
30 Jul 2024 By Guest A very enjoyable novel which was recommended to me, from an author I wasn't familiar with, however on the strength of this I will be looking out for future work. There is a strong sense of period and the lingering impact of WWI adds resonance. I submit this as a positive review as I believe it will be a welcome summer holiday read.
16 Jun 2024 A subtly crafted novel! Exotic, cultured and subtly crafted. This is a real winner! This novel deserves any attention that it receives. Thoroughly enjoyed it!
6 Jun 2024 Outstanding!! I loved this. Once started I was hooked!!. The relationship between the characters just worked and that's down to a deftness of touch, on the author's part. This was recommended to me and I think I will be checking the rest of this author's work on the strength of it. For me there was a sumptuous quality to this novel, that left me with a warm satisfied feeling after reading!
An accomplished novel Very accomplished!! The author has produced an entertaining intelligent novel, which is likely to win them a wider readership. There are numerous characters in this novel, which can present the reader with something of a challenge, yet the author has pulled it off, with a central group, from which other characters fan out. A few more historical facts would have anchored the period more firmly for me, however this is of minor, importance as the sense they were a gilded generation who were lucky to have escaped the horrors of WWI is one of this novel's finer attributes.
