Middle Grade
Eleven-year-old Rohan Hood has spent his life in The Cemetery – a bleak world where joy is forbidden and liking other boys is a dangerous secret. Everything changes when he rescues a wounded bat named Buddha and a mysterious black band appears around his wrist, leaving Rohan to wonder whether his people might still have a chance to make things right.
When the ruthless leader, Dolbeanz, discovers Rohan’s secret, he is forced to flee. His escape leads him to Mirum Adventrum, a school shimmering with life and wonder, where children learn to live in harmony with animals, spirits and the elements.
For the first time, Rohan feels like he belongs. But dark forces are stirring, and the gods of the Underworld have their eyes on him. To save his family, his friends and perhaps the world itself, Rohan must uncover the truth about his past and the wild magic that links him to Buddha… before the shadows rise again.
Here's what readers have to say about this book....
Although I know the author and wanted to support him by buying the book I wasn't sure I was going to enjoy it as it is not aimed at a middle aged woman! However although I found the initial few chapters a little confusing I started to think 'I'll just read a bit more' and in no time at all I had read it all and thoroughly enjoyed it. As it is a fantasy there are no rules to be broken when explaining plots, characters and behaviours. The creativity of the story combined with the central character, who is gay, feeling out of place and misunderstood will resonate with any child who feels they don't quite fit. Who knows what Rohan's destiny will be but it is good to see him realise that there are choices in life and he no longer has to be a victim. I would suggest that this book is for children at least 9+ who won't be put off by bullying, grossness and age-appropriate violence. To balance this the story demonstrates kindness, love, trust and parental support. Can't wait for the next one.
