London, 1989.
‘My grandad was the doorman at the Savoy Hotel, but he was also a Russian prince in the days when there were princes in Russia.’
That is all Milly really knows about her grandfather, Nicolai, but a school project about her family history pushes her to find out more. When she discovers an old diary written in Russian, she enlists the help of Ilya, a school friend whose family fled the Soviet Union, and begins to unravel Nicolai’s story. She learns of his escape from the Red Army, the loss of his family, a journey across Europe, and his experiences of hardship, love and kindness over the course of his travels.
As secrets about her family’s past are uncovered through Nicolai’s diary, Milly sees an opportunity that might help to heal the tragedies of the past. Her plans, however, have some unexpected consequences.
