A J (Alex) Proudfoot was born and bred in Edinburgh and, after leaving school, he worked as an accountant in the brewing, publishing and financial sectors, before switching his career to marketing, working at the University of Edinburgh for over twenty years.
Alex now lives in Musselburgh, just outside Edinburgh, and is divorced, with two daughters and one grand-daughter.
After taking early retirement, Alex spent his free time tracing his Proudfoot family history, back 900 years to the first man to bear the Proudfoot surname, an early-twelfth century sheriff of London.
Alex then challenged himself to see how far back in history he could trace his family. This research led him into the early Anglo-Saxon period and his earliest known ancestor, the subject of his first historical fiction novel.
